What Is Consumer Protection?

Corporations and insurance companies get away with deceiving consumers too often because people don’t know that they have rights that need to be respected. Corporations have the legal obligation to provide consumers with what they promise and to not maliciously mislead them. Consumer law is a fairly broad area of law that covers a variety of laws designed to regulate businesses and to protect the consumer.

Consumer protection laws exist at the federal and state level; at Graham Legal, our consumer protection lawyers can represent cases at either level. Many of the well-known federal consumer protection laws include the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Additionally, all states have their own set of laws that complement the federal laws.

What types of claims are considered consumer protection?

  • Identity theft
  • Insurance fraud
  • Insurance companies not paying for a legitimate claim
  • Deceptive advertising
  • Unfair credit reporting
  • Debt collection abuse
  • Defective products
  • Many other forms of consumer deception

There are federal and state agencies that regulate businesses to keep them within compliance of consumer laws, but those agencies do not represent the rights of individual consumers. If you have been wronged by a business or insurance agency, call Graham Legal at 305-985-6555 or send an email to speak with one of our consumer protection attorneys.
